3/28/2008: Just a brief update:
James Welch, Head of Research for JustSearch, was on the SEO panel described below, and gave a very well received presentation entitled “Gadget Ads: How could they work for you?” James has kindly made his PowerPoint presentation available for download here.

Would you believe that marketing people are beginning to proselytize about the use of widgets?
The “Search Engine Roundtable” blog writes a post from the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference taking place in New York, where a panel of marketing people talked to SEO professionals about “Widgets and Gadgets are taking over, but what are they?” Some of the marketers findings are:
- Widget marketing is still in its infancy
- Widget marketing right now is being led by technology know-how; it will be better driven by marketing people and strategies
- Widgets are proving to be strong advertising vehicles
- Widgets are showing high click-through rates (CTR)
- Good “viral” metrics are key
It is awesome to see this kind of discussion taking root at so many relevant gatherings.

I think you found me out, good sir. I just googled my SEO widget and your blog popped up. Google must have crawled an ad or feed when indexing your page.
I saw the potential when the bookmarking buttons started showing up everywhere. I remembered when I was a kid, I had a Digimon hit counter on my fan site. I figured I could do something similar - provide a script and get a backlink.
So I put up the floating ad generator thing, and low and behold, I started to see it places. You must have a feed from Furl or something?
Anyhow, you are totally right…and I’m a living example.
Sincerely,
Devin T.
